At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (Corps), John Milner Associates, Inc., (JMA) conducted National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 archaeological compliance site evaluations on Corps fee-title land in the New England District's Birch Hill Dam Reservoir Area in Royalston, Templeton and Winchendon, MA. The work was carried out for 26 sites; these include 8 pre-Contact and 18 historic sites. As a result, 10 historic sites are recommended eligible for the National Register. These sites include 3 historic farmsteads, a CCC camp and an industrial mill complex in Winchendon (WIN-HA-01, WIN-HA-03, WIN-HA-05, WIN-HA-06, and WIN-HA-12), and 2 rural mills and 3 industrial mill complexes in Templeton (TEM-HA-03, TEM-HA-04, TEM-HA-05, TEM-HA-06, and TEM-HA-08). The remaining 16 sites in the opinion of JMA do not meet the criteria of eligibility for the National Register. Field investigations also identified 5 additional sites; these include 3 historic sites and 2 pre-Contact sites. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 34 specialists.
