Cultural Resource Investigations in Conjunction with the Replacement of Locks and Dams 7 and 8, Monongahela River, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

Summary

GAI Consultants, Inc., conducted cultural resource investigations at five locales in preparation for the U S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) proposed replacement of Locks and Dams 7 and 8, USACE subject property Grays Landing, on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The investigations included the survey of approximately two miles of floodplain at Grays Landing, Pennsylvania; the investigation of historic potteries at New Geneva and Greensboro, Pennsylvania; the investigation of a historic glassworks site in New Geneva, Pennsylvania; and the investigation of the Gibson Site, a prehistoric site in West Virginia. Site numbers associated with this investigation are: 36FA77, 36FA 91, 36FA128, 36GR54, and 46MG27.

Seven prehistoric sites and a historic site were found during the survey of Grays Landing. Two of these are Late Woodland Monongahela Villages and appear to be potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The historic potteries at New Geneva and Greensboro may also be eligible, but the significant remains will not be impacted by the proposed COE project. No significant structural features or glass deposits were found at the Glassworks site in New Geneva. No evidence of a significant prehistoric occupation was found at the Gibson site in West Virginia.
