The threatened cultural archive in the German North Sea - A pilot project
Author(s): Mike Belasus; Ursula Warnke
Year: 2013
Summary
In 2011 the National Maritime Museum of Germany launched a pilot project, funded by the Ministry for Education and Research, on the evaluation of the archaeological potential in the North Sea with a focus on Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone. It has the aim to produce a base for future research and the protection of our common cultural heritage underwater. It is the first project of this kind in Germany; therefore the archaeological potential of the region has previously been unknown. This potential is threatened by, among other causes, the construction of pipelines and wind farms, gravel extraction and commercial fishing. We expect that most identified sites will be from historical periods, particularly shipwrecks but also submarines and aircraft. There will be extensive research in existing databases, and additional geophysical surveys will be carried out by the National Maritime Museum of Germany.
