Archaeological Monitoring Report: Subsurface Removal, New Boston Air Force Station, New Hampshire (Draft)

Summary

URS Group, Inc. (URS) was contracted by the United States (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District, under Contract Number (No.) W9128F-10-D-0061 Delivery Order 0006, to complete a subsurface removal action in multiple areas at New Boston Air Force Station (NBAFS), New Hampshire to remove munitions and explosives of concern (MEC).

The purpose of the overall project was to complete a subsurface removal to the depth of detection throughout NBAFS including 16 operations and recreational areas, two ponds, and along 26 designated roadways. NBAFS identified these high use areas of the installation for additional subsurface removal in order to reduce human exposure to potential subsurface MEC. The subsurface removal was completed in accordance with follow-on recommendations presented in the Final New Boston Air Force Station Action Memorandum for Former Active Range Area, to address residual subsurface hazards that remained at the MRSs following previous surface clearance activities (Shaw 2010a).

URS has prepared a separate Site Specific Final Report (SSFR) that describes the results of the 2013 and 2015 subsurface removal activities at NBAFS. Removal activities were completed to address multiple removal areas within seven munitions response sites (MRSs) at NBAFS: Joe English Pond (AW701), Target Buffer Area (MU702, MU702A, MU702B), Target Buffer Range Overshot Area (MU703A), Shooting Fields Overshot Area (MU703B), and Shooting Fields (MU705). The work was completed under the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP).
