Summary

Based on the results of a Stage 1A study, Stage IB field investigations were conducted for the Stockbridge Research Facility, located in the Towns of Stockbridge and Lincoln and City of Oneida, in Madison County, New York. The Stage 1A study determined that the Stockbridge Facility contained low, moderate and high archaeological sensitivities. Following the Stage 1A recommendations, no field testing was conducted within the areas of low sensitivity; in areas of high sensitivity; shovel tests were excavated at 25-foot intervals (at the remains of one nineteenth century farmstead); and at 50-foot intervals elsewhere. In areas of moderate sensitivity, shovel testing was conducted at 100-foot by 50-foot intervals. In only one location was surface inspection of a newly plowed field possible. In certain locations, the actual extent of prior disturbance by RRS activities had been under-rated by the Stage 1A study, making those locations not testable.

In addition to several very small widely spaced trash scatters, two cultural resources, both historic, were identified during the Stage IB study: 1) the Clement Farm, located along Burleson Road, and 2) the remains of a maple processing station, located in a hilly wooded “sugar bush” section in the northern portion of the Facility. The material recovered from the Clement Farm supports the range of dates expected from the preliminary historic research approximately 1830 to 1955. The maple processing location was probably not used beyond the late nineteenth century based on the kettle and stoneware remains recovered. Stage 2 site evaluation investigations are recommended for the Clement Farm and for the maple processing station. Stage 2 research might be able to supply information regarding early nineteenth century farming and associated activities in this part of New York State. No further archaeological investigations are recommended for the remainder o f the Facility. This recommendation does not, however, take into account the potential that the Facility might hold importance to traditional cultural local Native Americans, in particular the Oneida Indian Nation.
