Summary

On behalf of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory contracted TRC Environmental Corporation (TRC) to complete a Phase I cultural resources survey of approximately 162 hectares (400 acres) of selected, discontiguous Tactical Training Areas (TACs) on Fort Dix in New Hanover and Pemberton Townships, Burlington County and Plumsted Township, Ocean County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.

Completed between December 2003 and March 2004, field investigations included pedestrian survey and excavation of 7,260, 12-inch diameter shovel tests arrayed as 50-foot interval rectilinear grids within 23, 500-foot by 500-foot survey blocks and 73, 250-foot by 500-foot survey blocks. The purpose of the Phase 1 survey was to locate and identify any potentially significant cultural resources in portions of TACs 1D, 1E, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 3C, 5A, 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 8A, 8B, 9A, and 9B, and to refine the Archeological Predictive Model currently in place at Fort Dix. In addition, this investigation also involved systematic subsurface testing of 22 previously identified historic features/foundations and three previously identified prehistoric lithic surface scatters.

Field investigations recovered 2,471 artifacts, which included 175 Native America-related artifacts, 2,197 historic period artifacts, and 99 faunal specimens. The survey assessed 24 previously recorded archaeological sites (1 prehistoric, 22 historic, and 1 multi-component) and 27 previously undocumented archaeological sites (20 prehistoric and 11 historic). No recommendations can be made regarding previously reported site 28-BU-529, as it was not relocated. In total, 52 archaeological sites and 47 isolated artifact finds were investigated during this survey.

Previously undocumented sites assessed in this study: 28BU673, 28BU674, 28BU675, 28BU676, 28BU677, 28BU679, 28BU680, 28BU681, 28BU682, 28BU684, 28BU685, 28BU687, 28BU689, 28BU691, 28BU693, 28BU694, 28BU695, 28BU696, 28BU697, 28BU698, 28BU699, 28BU700, 28OC149, 28OC150, 28OC151, 28OC152.

The survey recommended Phase II archaeological testing for 36 sites (11 prehistoric sites and 25 historic sites). Additional investigation of the remaining 16 sites and the 47 isolated finds) is not considered warranted due to a low cultural material frequency and/or evidence of significant disturbance.
