The Evolutionary Development of Technology in Archaeology: An Open Discussion
Author(s): Eric Swanson
Year: 2018
Summary
Technology has driven the innovative growth and progress in many different industries over time. From agriculture to space exploration, technology has been driven towards answering questions that need to be answered. Technology in Archaeology is no different than other fields, however its growth is contingent on other innovative use of theory and practice using new tools in fields that have the funding for innovation, and the need for expedited answers. Through examining how technology has developed in the past, we can see a trend in the types of tools used in the aim of finding, identifying, documenting, and preserving the archaeological record. Non-invasive techniques are continuing to develop, and the practitioners of archaeology are continuously developing new uses for tools being used by other fields. This panel and open forum addresses the way technology has evolved, and focuses on the theory and practice behind technology in the field of archaeology.
