Archaeological Testing for Prehistoric Canals near Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Pinal County, Arizona

Author(s): Chris North; Michael S. Foster; Ron Ryden

Year: 2003

Summary

The report presents the results of archaeological testing for two prehistoric canals presumed to be located within a section of land in Coolidge, Arizona that is proposed for residential development. Hancock Communities, the project proponent, is aware of the archaeological sensitivity of the area surrounding the National Monument and requested that SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conduct archaeological testing to evaluate whether two prehistoric canals located on aerial photographs are present within the project area.

Archaeological testing was conducted as part of the project proponent’s due diligence process. No significant archaeological remains were identified. Decades of intense agricultural activities appear to have destroyed any evidence of prehistoric canals within the project area. SWCA recommends no further archaeological work within the project area.
