An Archaeological Assessment of Portions of the El Paso Natural Gas Line 2222, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Chris North; Deil R. Lundin
Year: 2003
Summary
At the request of El Paso Natural Gas (EPNG), SWCA conducted an archaeological assessment (site file search and field survey) of portions of EPNG Line 2222 in Maricopa County, Arizona. EPNG is currently conducting a system-wide pipeline integrity program that will enable EPNG to monitor its natural gas lines for internal corrosion. As part of this program, EPNG needs to install a bi-directional trap and replace a segment of pipeline to install a barred tee on the Line 2222. The general project area is located in the eastern Phoenix Basin in the community of Chandler, Arizona. Both work localities along the Line 2222 are located in developed portions of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Each of the two locations was examined for the presence of prehistoric and historic archaeological resources. Legal descriptions of the two pipeline upgrade locations and a scope-of-work to be performed at each locality are presented.
EPNG has identified two work areas that are located well away from previously recorded prehistoric and historic sites and all known cultural resources will be avoided during the proposed pipeline upgrades. No new archaeological resources (isolated occurrences, features, or sites) were identified during the course of this project. Because the work proposed by EPNG will not impact any known cultural properties, no further work is recommended for this project. SWCA did not conduct an assessment of Traditional Cultural Properties (TCPs), as this task falls outside the scope of this project.
