Archaeological Monitoring and Testing at E. Pierce Street, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): John M. Lindly
Year: 2004
Summary
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and testing E. Pierce in Phoenix. The project area includes an approximately 5400 square foot lot with a residence. This project was conducted at the request of the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department under an on-call archaeological services contract between the City and SWCA, Inc. (Contract no. 101005) and was assigned project number PGM 2003-36 by the City of Phoenix Archaeology Section. This project will receive funding from Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and as such compliance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is required.
Archaeological monitoring was required during a house demolition and the excavation of a test trench was conducted after the house was demolished due to a prehistoric canal being mapped in the project area. A prehistoric canal was found and documented during testing (AZ T:12:194 [ASM]) but it is unclear whether this is the canal that was mapped in the area or another undocumented canal. Additional limited data recovery that would further investigate the canal is recommended.
