A Preliminary Report of Archaeological Testing at AZ T:7:178-181 (ASM) in the Proposed Cortessa Development, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Chris North

Year: 2004

Summary

SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted archaeological testing at AZ T:7:178, AZ T:7:179, AZ T:7:180, and AZ T:7:181 (ASM) in May, 2004. These sites are located in Maricopa, Arizona. The project area is proposed for residential development. A permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act from the Army Corp of Engineers is necessary to proceed with the development. An archaeological survey of the project area identified four prehistoric sites, AZ T:7:178-181 (ASM), that were recommended as potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (Ryden and Wenker 2000). SWCA recommended archaeological testing at these four sites to better evaluate their significance. The archaeological survey of the project area and subsequent testing at AZ T:7:178-181 (ASM) was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as mandated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act.

Fieldwork at AZ T:7:178-181 (ASM) followed the methods and level of work described in an archaeological treatment plan for the Cortessa Development Project (Foster 2004). This treatment plan called for detailed mapping and the excavation of two rock piles at AZ T:7:178 (ASM). Detailed mapping and the excavation of one rock pile was proposed for AZ T:7:179 (ASM). At AZ T:7:180 (ASM) the treatment plan stated that the site would be mapped in detail, six 1.5 m2 test units (TUs) would be excavated in and near the main artifact concentration, and surface artifacts would be collected. At AZ T:7:181 (ASM), the treatment plan stated that the site would be mapped in detail, eight 1.5 m2 TUs would be excavated in and near the sherd concentrations, and surface artifacts would be collected. The prescribed level of work was completed at all sites without exception. All TUs were excavated in 15 cm arbitrary levels until culturally sterile deposits were encountered.

Based on preliminary testing results, the sites do not appear to be eligible for inclusion to the NRHP, Therefore, no further archaeological work is recommended for the four prehistoric sites.
