An Archaeological Survey for the Proposed Rancho Vistoso Neighborhood 5 Middle School, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): India S. Hesse
Year: 2007
Summary
SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) was contracted by PinnacleOne to conduct an archaeological survey for the proposed Rancho Vistoso Neighborhood 5 Middle School project. The Amphitheater School District proposes to build a new public middle school on a 36.3-acre parcel that will be donated to them by Vistoso Partners, Inc., in the Town of Oro Valley, Pima County, Arizona. SWCA was contracted by PinnacleOne to conduct an archaeological survey of the parcel to aid the Amphitheater Unified School District in complying with the State Historic Preservation Act. The project area is located in the Town of Oro Valley in Pima County, Arizona.
An archaeological survey conducted for the proposed Rancho Vistoso Neighborhood 5 Middle School project resulted in the identification of one newly discovered prehistoric Native American archaeological site and one isolated occurrence (IO) of cultural resources. SWCA recommends AZ BB:9:417(ASM) eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Regardless of project design and the school facility’s construction footprint, the archaeological site will be impacted because of its proximity to the proposed middle school. SWCA recommends that a data recovery plan be drafted and implemented for AZ BB:9:417(ASM) prior to the proposed project.
No additional archaeological work or mitigation measures are recommended for the remainder of the project area. However, in the event that previously undocumented buried cultural resources are identified during ground-disturbing activities, all work in the immediate vicinity of the discovery should stop until it can be evaluated by a professional archaeologist.
