Summary

In preparation for building construction, the Salt River Project (SRP) is reconfiguring an irrigation facility on Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) easement in Phoenix, Maricopa County. Specifically, existing above ground irrigation canals are being abandoned and replaced with subsurface concrete pipes. Because Reclamation is a federal agency, the project is subject to compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended.

The project area is located within the boundaries of previously recorded archaeological site AZ T:12:52 (ASM), known as Pueblo del Alamo. Previously investigated areas of the site contained a highly disturbed ground surface, but yielded intact subsurface cultural features such as houses and inhumations. Reclamation determined that the project had the potential to adversely affect subsurface remains of AZ T:12:52 (ASM), and as mitigation, required that an archaeological monitor be present during ground disturbance. At the request of the landowner ProLogis, SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted archaeological monitoring from March 26 to May 19, 2012, during the excavation of pipe trenches and for associated SRP structures and manholes. All monitoring was conducted according to the methods described in Archaeological Monitoring and Discovery Plan for Pueblo del Alamo (AZ T:12:52 [ASM]), Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona (Ferland 2011).

No features were identified during archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance at AZ T:12:52 (ASM), Pueblo del Alamo. Artifacts were observed in backdirt piles and disturbed contexts, and included plainware bowl and jar sherds, tested cobbles, ground stone fragments, and one lithic flake. No artifacts were collected. No further work is recommended; however, if previously undocumented buried cultural resources are identified during construction activities, all work in the immediate vicinity of the discovery should stop until the find can be evaluated by a professional archaeologist.
