Archaeological Testing for the Casa de Shanti Project in Phoenix, Arizona
Author(s): Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1993
Summary
The Casa de Shanti project involves new construction on approximately 2 acres of land in South Phoenix. SWCA was requested by Camelot Financial Services, representing the Phoenix Shanti Group, to implement an archaeological testing program for the parcel in order to identify and evaluate any cultural resources that are within the project boundaries. This is required because the project will be wholly or partly funded by federal monies (Department of Housing and Urban Development) and is therefore subject to federal antiquities legislation. Additionally, the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) requested that an archeological testing program be conducted because the project lies within boundaries of a large prehistoric site called Pueblo Viejo (see below). This site is potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) so the impact of the project on it must be assessed.
A testing program was conducted on the parcel on December 22 and 23, 1992 by SWCA. Douglas R. Mitchell and Robert G. Haynes-Peterson conducted the fieldwork during this field testing phase. As a result of the excavation of 22 backhoe trenches, three prehistoric cultural features were located. Prehistoric artifacts were also collected from within the trenches. Based on the testing program results, it is recommended that the project proceed as planned with the acceptance of specific conditions. These conditions include permanent subsurface avoidance of the northwestern part of the parcel, which is where the prehistoric features were identified.
