Summary
This document is a report on archaeological testing and data recovery at two prehistoric sites east of Florence, Arizona. The project area is on Arizona State Trust Land in Pinal county. The project was conducted at the request of Mr. Larry Hartman of Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall (DMJM) of Phoenix, Arizona. Archaeological testing and data recovery were conducted by SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants, Tucson.
The two archaeological sites (AZ U:15:227 and AZ U:15:229 [ASM]) are in the proposed construction zone for a new prison facility, the ASPC--Eyman—Meadows Unit. The sites were discovered by archaeologists from SWCA during a survey of the 67 hectare (165 acre) parcel in which the new facility will be built. The sites could not be avoided during construction. SWCA therefore conducted testing and excavations at the sites.
Surface collection, testing, and data recovery conducted at Sites AZ U:15:227 and 229 (ASM) were sufficient to obtain information concerning the date of occupation of the sites and the activities preformed there. SWCA therefore recommends no further archaeological studies prior to construction of the Eyman-Meadows Unit.
This recommendation applies only to the construction area of direct impact and not to the entire quarter section designated as the project area. If further activities may affect cultural properties outside the current construction area, additional archaeological studies may be needed.
