Archaeological Testing Within the Adamsville Ruin for Wood Pole Replacements in the Oracle-Coolidge 115 KV Transmission Line, Pinal County, Arizona
Author(s): Michael Stubing; Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1998
Summary
The results of archaeological testing within a portion of the Adamsville Ruin, a large Classic Period Hohokam site, are presented in this report. The testing was done at the request of the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), owners of the Oracle-Coolidge 115 KV transmission line, a segment of which lies within the boundaries of the Adamsville Ruin. The testing was done to evaluate the effects of power pole replacement on the site.
The Adamsville Ruin, AZ U:15:1 (ASM), is a large Hohokam village containing a platform mound, ball court, structures, numerous trash mounds, and a large artifact scatter. The site encompasses approximately 40 acres, with maximum site dimensions of 750 m (2460 feet) northeast-southwest x 450 m (1476 feet). The site lies within both Arizona State Trust Land and privately owned land; the portion of the site in which the work was performed is privately owned.
The WAPA power line runs in an east-west orientation through the northern portion of the site, and includes three sets of wood poles within the site boundaries. The testing program included the excavation of four 0.5 X 0.5 m excavation units adjacent to power poles 4-8 and 4-9, and mapping of the site. A revised ASM site card, incorporating information gained from the testing program, was submitted to the Arizona State Museum for AZ U: 15:1 (ASM).
Results of the testing indicate both poles in sets 4-8 and 4-9 are located within the artifact scatter present throughout the site, and that the poles in set 4-8 are situated within a cremation area. Based on these results, further work is recommended to recover any human remains that may be impacted by the replacement of pole number 4-8. Archaeological monitoring is also recommended during any subsurface construction activities related to the replacement of pole numbers 4-7, 4-8, and 4-9.
