Archaeological Testing for the Phillips Road Extension, Sites AZ U:14:95 and AZ U:14:308 (ASM), Pinal County, Arizona
Author(s): Michael Stubing; Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1998
Summary
This report presents the results of archaeological testing within portions of AZ U:14:95 (ASM) and AZ U:14:308 (ASM) in northern Pinal County, Arizona. The sites are Hohokam artifact scatters that are within the proposed Phillips Road extension, SWCA, Inc. conducted the testing at the request of Planning Resources of Tempe, Arizona, to assess the nature and extent of the two sites that are within the proposed right-of-way. Nine previously recorded trail segments within the proposed right-of-way were also evaluated. The two sites and trail segments were previously recorded during archaeological surveys of the proposed road easement (Heuett and Vrettos 1998), and surrounding area (Slawson 1989; 1990).
Testing within the two sites included surface collection, and excavation of two 1 x 1 m units within each site. In addition, two 50 m long backhoe trenches were excavated within AZ U:14:308 (ASM). All surface collection and excavation was confined to the portion of each site that was within the right-of-way of the proposed Phillips Road extension. Evaluation of the trails included attempts to re-locate them, and recordation of their attributes.
Results of the testing indicate neither site contains subsurface deposition. No features were located either above or below the surface of either site, and artifact density in the portions of the two sites within the right-of-way was low. Four of the previously recorded trail segments were not relocated. The five trail segments that were examined were found to be of either modern human or animal origin. Based on the results of testing, no further work is recommended for the portions of AZ U: 14:95 (ASM) and AZ U:14:308 (ASM) that are located within the project right-of-way.
