Archaeological Testing at Site AZ AA:12:834 (ASM), The Shamrock Center Property, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): David P. Doak
Year: 1998
Summary
On July 15, 1998, five test trenches were excavated at Site AZ AA:12:834 (ASM). The site was the excavations were done on behalf of El Dorado Holdings, Inc., the organization that is supervising development of the Shamrock Center development. The site was originally recorded during a 1998 survey as a low-density scatter of sherds, lithics, and groundstone spread over an area about 50 m across. Based on testing results, it appears to actually be somewhat smaller. One archaeological "feature", an amorphous concentration of sherds, lithics, ground stone, and charcoal flecks visible in both sidewalls of a backhoe trench, was identified during testing. A total of about 25 artifacts was recovered from this trench, with as many as 50 additional artifacts coming front surface- and immediate-subsurface contexts elsewhere at the site. While the feature extended to a depth of approximately 80 cm below the present ground surface, elsewhere nothing was noted farther than 20 cm below surface. In this context, it is unlikely that further excavation at this site would contribute to an understanding of prehistory. SWCA therefore recommends archaeological clearance for this project.
