Author(s): Thomas D. Yoder

Year: 1999

Summary

SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA) has conducted archaeological investigations at 10 sites. This work was requested by Asarco, Inc. to facilitate compliance by all aspects of the Arizona State Land-ASARCO Ray Land Purchase with all applicable Cultural Resource and Historic Preservation regulations. The project served to mitigate impacts to historic properties located in the project area in a consistent manner and in accord with a unified research design. Archaeological testing was conducted on all of the project sites in order to determine their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. Data-recovery investigations were conducted at five of the project sites once National Register eligibility determinations were made by the Arizona State Lands Department.

Seven Research Themes were identified as relevant to the archaeological sites in the project area. These themes reflect current research emphases concerning the history and prehistory of central Arizona, as well as our perspective on the organization of research. The seven themes that have been identified to guide our research on prehistoric sites in the Walnut Canyon Project area are (1) Chronology, (2) Paleoenvironment, (3) Cultural Affiliation, (4) Subsistence, Diet, and Resource Exploitation, (5) Settlement Patterns and Settlement Systems, (6) Site and Community Structure, and (7) Areal, Regional, and Extra-regional Socioeconomic Relations.
