Archaeological Investigations at an Early Classic Period Farmstead - The First Peoples Site
Author(s): Chester W. Shaw
Year: 2004
Summary
Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has completed archaeological investigations. Investigations included testing and data recovery of prehistoric cultural resources. Work was completed for Trend Homes at the request of the City of Phoenix, Neighborhood Services Department. This project was initially referred to as the “Bellatrix Project”, but is now called the “Trend Homes Project”. Fieldwork was conducted between 23 January and 19 March 2003 by Brent Kober (Project Director) under the supervision of Chester W. Shaw (Principle Investigator).
The current work follows a monitoring phase in which three prehistoric structures and several canals were documented. The structures, observed in the profiles of trench walls, were originally identified as field houses. Field houses are characterized as seasonally occupied habitations, usually small in overall dimension and lacking in the degree of formalized preparation. Field houses are often associated with farming and other agricultural pursuits such as canal maintenance and operation. Given the project areas position along several canals and at a considerable distance from a known Hohokam village, field houses were expected.
At the onset of the current investigation backhoe trenching revealed large structures containing multiple hearths, as well as several extramural features including trash pits and numerous thermal and nonthermal pits (AZ T:12:183[ASM]). In addition to these features three burials were encountered.
