Author(s): John L. Czarzasty; Glen E. Rice

Year: 2005

Summary

The test excavation and data recovery plan for the site of Las Cremaciones reported in this monograph was conducted to assist Great Western Homes in their consultation with the City of Phoenix concerning the proposed construction of a housing development on the main occupation area of Las Cremaciones, site AZ T:12:220 (ASM), previously recorded as site AZ T:12:4 (PG).

The archaeological subsurface test conducted in March 2005 determined that cremation burials were present in three loci. The test was conducted at the request of Michael Lee of Great Western Homes. The purpose of the test was to assist Great Western Homes in complying with Arizona Statute A.R.S. 41-865 and the City of Phoenix Ordinance on Historic Preservation (Chapter 8, Section 802). The statute and ordinance pertain to the recovery of prehistoric Native American burials and their repatriation to appropriate culturally affiliated Native American communities.

This project used an existing burial agreement previously reached by the City of Phoenix, working with the Arizona State Museum, and the Salt River Pima - Maricopa Indian Community designating the Community as the group to accept the human remains and associated grave goods from Las Cremaciones for repatriation. Additionally, during the test phase cultural representatives from the Salt River Pima - Maricopa Indian Community visited the site to bless the burials before they were removed. Remains were not removed until the site had been blessed.
