Archaeological Testing of The Citrus Cove Development, Queen Creek, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary
Desert Archaeology, Inc., has completed archaeological testing of a 2.34-acre area of the proposed Citrus Cove Subdivision Development, Queen Creek, Maricopa County, Arizona. The work was requested by Southwest Custom, L.L.C., and was prompted by the finding of our previous archaeological survey that the northeastern corner of the parcel contained an artifact concentration likely associated with Pozos de Sonoqui (AZ U:14:49 [ASM]), a National Register-eligible site (Clark 2002). Testing began on 4 September 2002, under the direction of Tiffany Clark, and was completed on 6 September 2002. A total of 56 person-hours was expended in this effort. The fieldwork was conducted in accordance with the testing plan prepared by Desert Archaeology (Clark 2002). The objective of the testing program was to determine if buried cultural remains were present and, if found, to evaluate them in terms of their extent and pattern of distribution, depth, and integrity.
A total of 288 linear meters (945 ft) of trench was excavated during testing, resulting in the discovery of five archaeological features. Trenching was focused in the northeastern corner of the project parcel (Lot 9), in the area containing the artifact concentration. Additional trenches were excavated west and south of the artifact scatter to better define the extent of subsurface archaeological remains in the area. Data from the testing effort indicate the distribution of buried cultural remains generally corresponds with the surface artifact concentration and suggest subsurface cultural resources are largely confined to the northern portion of the tested area. This report presents background information on the project, descriptions of the field methods, the results of the testing program, and a recommendation for some type of treatment to mitigate the impact of proposed development on the archaeological resources in the project area.
