Author(s): Melissa A Timo

Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Monuments, Memory, and Commemoration" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The NC Division of Cultural Resources has enacted a division-wide plan to recognize and embrace the state’s African American heritage resources and communities in a dynamic way. In particular, the Division is taking an active role to support the stewardship of NC’s African American burial grounds. This paper will detail how the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology, African American Heritage Commission, SHPO, and Library and Archives programs are coming together to stand behind the African American Burial Ground Network Act (HR 1179). North Carolina DCR hopes to offer other state agencies, local governments, and cultural organizations a model for approaching African American cemetery resources and for actively engaging and partnering with communities and stakeholders to revolutionize how these threatened cultural landscapes are incorporated into the modern understanding of historical and cultural narratives.
