ROI008, An Archaeological Survey of the Newport Army Ammunition Plant, Vermillion County, Indiana: Predicting the Archaeological Potential of an Upland Forest-Prairie Edge in West Central Indiana

Summary

A survey of the Newport Army Ammunition Plant, utilizing a 10.8 percent stratified sample, revealed 144 sites for the plant property and predicted between 1200 and 1500 others. Of the 144 sites found, only ten appeared to have any potential for meeting National Register criteria for significance. Prior to the survey, a predictive model of land use representing activities potentially carried out by aboriginal inhabitants of the area was devised, taking into consideration previous studies in prairie and upland forest environments in other parts of the Midwestern U.S.A. and also the potential resources of the prairie-forest ecotone in the NAAP area. The survey data was used to test hypotheses concerning site distribution and the artifact assemblages of sites in the area derived from that model. The results of the survey suggested that prehistoric usage of prairie-forest ecotone areas was more complex than can be predicted using a simple dispersed hunting pattern model.
