Summary

A cultural resource inventory was conducted by the Office of the Wyoming State Archeologist on the proposed Happy Jack Road at the request of the Wyoming Highway Department. David G. Eckles served as principal investigator and field director for this project. David Reiss and David Eckles performed the survey. Field investigations were conducted on March 20, 1985.

The proposed highway right-of-way is 1.4 mi in length and is 600 ft in width. Legal descriptions of all affected areas are as follows (Figure 1): T14N, R67W, Section 35, portion S/S; Section 36, portion NW/SW. The project area is located on F.E. Warren Air Force Base. A portion of 48LA106 (Cheyenne Depot) was located, but does not have a high significant scientific data content and no further work is recommended. The Happy Jack Road (48LA541) is within the project area, but the original trail is now paved over; no original remnants were located and no further work is recommended. Sites 48LA274 and 48LA505 were previously recorded lithic scatters.

No further work is recommended for 48LA274, and for 48LA505 mapping, collection and construction monitoring are recommended. It is finally recommended that in the area where the new road crosses Crow Creek, that an archeological crew be present in the event subsurface cultural remains are uncovered.
