Summary

On behalf of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory contracted Versar, Inc. to complete a Phase I cultural resources survey of 2,400 acres and Phase II NRHP eligibility evaluation of 11 archaeological sites in New Hanover, Pemberton, and Springfield Townships, and Wrightstown Borough, Burlington County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.

Completed between April 22 and December 22, 2019, Phase I field investigations included pedestrian survey and the excavation of 1,472 shovel tests (1,237 within block shovel test areas and 235 within point survey areas) and 10, 0.5m x 0.5m and 1m2 test units. Phase II field investigations included pedestrian survey and the excavation of 375 shovel tests and 45, 0.5m x 0.5m, and 1m2 test units.

The Phase I survey included seven block STAs and 15 point survey areas in portions of the ASP area and TAC, 5A/B, 5C, and 5E. Seven previously unrecorded sites were documented: one prehistoric, three historical, and three with both historical and prehistoric components. The prehistoric sites and components represent the Early Woodland period as well as indeterminate Woodland period and undated occupations. The historic sites represent Euro-American occupations between the late-eighteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. One prehistoric site (28BU968) was recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. One multicomponent site (28BU967) was recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Two multicomponent sites (28BU969 and 28BU971) were recommended not eligible. One historic site (28BU970) was recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Two historic sites (28BU972 and 28BU973) were recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.

The Phase II survey evaluated eight previously recorded sites for NRHP eligibility: 28BU517, 28BU519/530, 28BU528, 28BU539, 28BU630, 28BU634, and 28BU636. Of these, two prehistoric sites (28BU634, and 28BU636) and the prehistoric components of four multicomponent sites (28BU517, 28BU519/530, 28BU528) were recommended eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Two prehistoric sites (28BU539 and 28BU630) were recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The historic components of the four multicomponent sites (28BU517, 28BU519/530, and 28BU528) were recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
