Archaeological Test Excavations at the Valencia Site, AZ BB:13:15 (ASM), Tucson, Pima County, Arizona

Author(s): R. Thomas Euler

Year: 1991

Summary

During December, 1990, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc. Environmental Consultants of Tucson, Arizona, conducted an archaeological testing program on the southernmost portions of Valencia Site, AZ BB:13:15 (ASM). The Valencia Site is known to represent the remains of a major Tucson Basin Preclassic period Hohokam village. Previous investigations of this site by the Institute for American Research had indicated that the current study area had a low surface artifact density and a low probability for subsurface features. The area is slated for development by the United States Department of Energy, Western Area Power Administration as the Del Bac Switching Station.

This testing program was requested by the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), and work was conducted under BOR Contract No. 9-CS-32-00600, Delivery Order No. 9-PD-32-00600-005. The purpose of this testing program was to determine the presence or absence of significant subsurface deposits as they relate to effects on a National Register property. This report documents the nature and results of the archaeological testing conducted in the southernmost area of the site.

In 1984 the Valencia Site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the current study area is contained within the boundaries of the original nomination, the area tested during the current study was found to contain only one possible feature of unknown function and origin. No significant subsurface cultural deposits were identified during the testing program.

The archaeological testing program reported on herein has in all probability apparently exhausted the information potential of this specific area. SWCA therefore recommends that construction of the Del Bac Switching Station will have no effect on the National Register property.
