Tucson Aqueduct Project Phase A
Summary
Reaches 1 and 2 of the Tucson Aqueduct portion of the Central Arizona Project extend from the terminus of the Salt-Gila Aqueduct just east of Picacho Reservoir (12 km southeast of Coolidge) south along the western flanks of the Picacho Mountains, east along the southern flanks of the Picacho Mountains through Picacho Pass, and then south to the vicinity of Red Rock. A Class III archaeological survey of the aqueduct corridor and associated areas was conducted by Arizona State Museum archaeologists (Czaplicki 1984). As a result of projected impacts to archaeological resources, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation instituted a plan of study designed to comply with federal and state legislation and regulations regarding the management of cultural resources. From an archaeological perspective, the paramount objective is to recover information which will provide a better understanding of prehistoric developments in the study area and the surrounding region, and in turn will lead to general anthropological conclusions. In the original plan prepared by Reclamation 36 Hohokam sites formed the data base for study. However, during research design preparation and review three of those sites were eliminated from the study and one new site was added to bring the final total to 34.
