Old Mobile (1MB94) Structure 32, Mobile County, Alabama.
Summary
Structure 32 at the Old Mobile site (1MB94) was excavated intermittently between 1996 and 2003, with the entire building plan finally exposed and excavated in 2007. This was a very long pieux-en-terre building, with subsurface wall trenches preserved below plowzone. Built in two nearly identical stages, the final stage of occupation formed a duplex, with an additional wall trench off the southeast wall that probably served as hearth and bread oven platform. The first construction phase consisted of a rectangular building with a partial interior partition wall in the southeast end, and an external doorway in the middle of the southwest wall. A small refuse-filled materials pit associated with this first phase is situated immediately off the southeast corner of that original building. The second construction phase intruded on that refuse pit and essentilaly duplicated the first phase of construction, doubling the length of the house to the southeast, with a very similar partial interior partition wall in the southeast end. The presumed hearth/bread oven extension relates to this second phase. In the absence of other associated refuse pits, the artifact assemblage from this large structure is sparse, but generally resembles the material culture found at Structures 30 and 31. All three are thought to have served as barracks for the garrison of Fort Louis, which was situated immediately to the east. The locations of doorways in the southwest wall, as with Structure 31, and the alignment of those two structures, suggests that a street ran along the west side of both buildings.
