Field School at Sites 12G9 and 12G10 1975-1976
Summary
The purpose of the research conducted primarily at sites 12G9 and 12G10 was to document the activities of the Battle of the Mississinewa and the related role of the Miami and Delaware villages along the Mississinewa Reservoir in Grant and Wabash counties. Upon the passing of budget item H.E.B. 1102, the principal investigator, B.K. Swartz Jr., initiated research with a field school from Ball State University in 1975. A second field school in relation to this investigation was conducted in 1976. The work performed for the 1975 Field School was aimed at documenting the location of the Battle of Mississinewa within sites 12G9, 12G10, and 12G11, and 12WB21. These sites are referenced as the First Village (12G9), Hackelman’s Battlefield location (12G10), Stuber’s soldiers grave site (12G10a), Pierce’s redoubt (12G10b), the Troyer site (12WB21), the 1975 test pit (12WB21a), and the 1976 cabin excavation (12WB21b). The Troyer Site was also excavated to obtain a soil profile and a cultural sequence for future excavations (Swartz, Jr. 1975).
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP) and include the artifact database, select artifact photographs, the artifact report, the finding aid, investigation report, oversized material spreadsheet and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs, box labels, correspondence, excavation forms, the initial data sheet, folder listings, laboratory records, material labels, notes, photo records, records removal sheets and survey forms. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
