Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979

Summary

This collection is referred to as "Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is one and a half (1.5) linear inches.

The documents date from 1968 to 1979. The investigation occurred in 1979, which explains the date of the project name. The range of dates includes a field map that was originally created in 1968. The documents were originally housed in acidic files in a cardboard box with other collections from the Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area. The documents were originally lacking a discernible order. Metal and plastic contaminants were found throughout the collection, and these were removed. Tape was also found in the collection and the tape that could be removed without damaging the documents was removed. Personal information was found in the final reports (Folder 4/3), and this was removed. The Abstract Draft for SCL R-2, contained sites 9EB427 and 9EB927. It is presumed that 9EB927 was written in error by the original writer, as it is not found elsewhere throughout the collection.

The collection contained five oversized maps from the investigation area that required flattening and smoothing. The documents were placed in the oversized storage.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, original investigation reports, oversized material spreadsheet, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, continuation sheet, disposition form, document folder listing, initial data collection, management statements, maps, notes, oversized labels, preliminary report, project documents, records removal sheet, and a scope of work. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.

    DOCUMENT Full-Text Richard A. Warner.

This report presents the results of a cultural resources survey of three proposed borrow areas associated with the relocation of a portion of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad (Map Reference R-3). One site was discovered within the project area. This site consists of a brick scatter which has been heavily impacted and is not recommended for further investigation. No other cultural resources were discovered on the remaining borrow areas and cultural clearance is advised for the entire project.

  3. An Intensive Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation R-2 and Associated Boroow Area, Richard B. Russell Reservoir, Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979 (1979)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Richard A. Warner.

This report presents the findings of an archaeological survey of a proposed railroad relocation of a section of Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, labeled R-2 in the Army Corps of Engineers maps. An associated 27 acre (10.9 hectare) borrow area was included in this survey. The results of the survey of the borrow area indicate that one potentially significant prehistoric archaeological site labeled Site //2 (Borrow Area R-2) does exist within the borrow zone and will require additional mitigation...

  4. An Intensive Archaeological Survey of two Proposed Borrow Areas Associated with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad R-1, Richard B. Russell Reservoir, Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Relocation 1979 (1979)
