Northland has completed Phase II data recovery excavations in the D-M-286 project area. Archaeological investigations were conducted in the eastern one-third of the project area, based on the results of Phase I investigations which encountered prehistoric cultural features in that portion of the parcel. Mechanical stripping in this area exposed 25 features in plan view. Northland completely excavated five pits, sampled 17 pits, and tested three pit houses with 1- by 2-m test units. Features were...
Cultural Resources Testing at Las Canopas (AZ T:12:137[ASM]), Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona (2005)
Northland has completed cultural resources testing at two parcels. During the project, 83 trenches were mechanically excavated, totaling 1,613.3 meters. Trenches were roughly 20 m long, 65 cm wide, and 1.5 m deep. They were laid out in a checkerboard pattern across both loci, with trenches spaced 40 m apart east-west. This equates to approximately a 1.25 percent subsurface sample of the 20.7 acre project area. Testing confirmed the presence of features associated with Las Canopas (AZ...
Data Recovery at AZ T:12:413(ASM) for the Roeser Haciendas Development Project, Phoenix, Arizona (2016)
The site (AZ T:12:413[ASM]) was recommended as eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Avoidance to the site was not feasible so data recovery was conducted under an existing City-approved Plan, entitled “General Historic Properties Treatment Plan for Archaeological Projects Within the Boundaries of the City of Phoenix, Arizona” (Montero et al. 2008). A Supplemental Data Recovery Work Plan submitted to the City (see Mitchell 2011) was approved and implemented. As a...

Hohokam Farming Settlements in North Scottsdale: Archaeological Excavations at AZ U:1:183 (ASM) and AZ U:1:186 (ASM) (2001)
This report discusses excavation results at two Hohokam farmsteads (AZ U:1:183 [ASM] and AZ U:1:186 [ASM]) in north Scottsdale, Arizona. Data recovery investigations identified one pithouse and several extramural features at both sites. In addition, a pole-and-brush-lined surface structure was identified at AZ U:1:186 (ASM) that suggests the pithouse may have functioned as a cold-season dwelling while the surface structure served as a warm-season dwelling. Architecture and material culture...
Indian Burial Mounds in the Missouri River Basin (1960)
Since its inauguration in 1946, the Missouri Basin Project of the Smithsonian Institution, along with other cooperating Federal, State and local agencies, has concentrated its efforts toward the salvage of archeological materials that will be lost by the construction of dams and the flooding of reservoirs along the Missouri River and its tributaries. The surveys and excavations have been conducted at historic military forts, trading posts, pioneer settlements and Indian villages; however, most...
Intensive Archaeological Survey of a Portion of Kirtland Air Force Base (1978)
The Center for Anthropological Studies has recently completed an intensive field survey of an approximate 7.5 square mile area of Kirtland Air Force Base. Archaeological information was recorded from 19 non-site loci and 16 prehistoric and/or historic sites. The majority of the recovered archaeological remains suggests the seasonal use of particular parts of this area by Middle Rio Grande Pueblo Indians during the general interval between A.D.1150 and 1350. Earlier materials consist exclusively...

Studies Along the Lower Agua Fria River: The Eastwing Site and the Marinette Canal (1987)
Two sites, one prehistoric and one historic, situated northwest of Phoenix and in the south-central part of Arizona, are discussed. Limited field excavation and archival research reveal that the historic site, the Marinette Canal (NA18,267), built in 1910, may have been fed by well water, local runoff, and the seasonal flow of the Agua Fria River. It heads along Calderwood Butte and extends almost 10 km southward toward the present community of Sun City, Arizona. The prehistoric site, the...
The Sun Lakes-Casa Grande Project: Limited Archaeological Testing at Twenty-one Sites near the Toltec Buttes, Eloy, Arizona (2004)

The work was done at the request of Mr. Jason Burgess of B&R Engineering, Inc., acting on behalf of Sun Lakes-Casa Grande Development, LLC, an affiliate of Robson Communities, Inc., who intend to construct a planned community of housing and...
Times of Transition: Excavations at the Pima Animal Care Center, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona (2018)
Excavations at the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) revealed a unique portion of the prehistoric Hohokam landscape. Uncovered were the vestiges of a settlement that was occupied for two short periods at the beginning and the end of the Hohokam pre-Classic. Both periods of occupation occurred during times of transition in the prehistoric Tucson Basin. The Tortolita phase occupation corresponds with the founding of villages and the transition to Hohokam lifeways throughout southern and central...
