Neotaphonomy of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Bone assemblages from modern landscapes can help address a variety of issues, from the degree to which bone scatters accurately reflect local habitats to what variables condition the deposition, preservation, and spatial distribution of faunal material. This collection documents a multi-year neotaphonomic study area of open grassland about two kilometers north of Olduvai Gorge in

the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), Tanzania.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Identifying the variables that influence the deposition, preservation, and spatial distribution of faunal material across landscapes remains a key goal of taphonomic research. Here, we report on the results of pedestrian surveys for faunal material around a seasonal waterhole surrounded by woodland within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). All visible...

R code for Spatial analysis and neotaphonomy data from two landscape bone assemblages in the Ngorongoro dataset

  • Spatial analysis and neotaphonomy data from two landscape bone assemblages in the Ngorongoro (2024)
    DATASET Charles Egeland. Cynthia Fadem.

Two 100 m x 200 m survey blocks, located approximately one kilometer from each other and referred to as Olduvai Transect 1 (OT1) and Olduvai Transect 2 (OT2), were visited in 2015 (OT1) and 2018 (OT2) at the height of the dry season in mid-June or July. OT1 occurs in a treeless section of the plain , while OT2 contains a stand of trees surrounding a seasonal waterhole (Figure 2). A series of abandoned Maasai homesteads (bomas) were located to the south and to the west of OT2 at the time of data...

  • Taphonomy of a modern landscape bone assemblage in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Liat Lebovich. Victoria P. Johnson. Ryan M. Byerly. Cynthia M. Fadem. Charles P. Egeland.

Bone assemblages from modern landscapes can help address a variety of issues, from the degree to which bone scatters accurately reflect local habitats to what variables condition the deposition, preservation, and spatial distribution of faunal material. In 2015, systematic pedestrian survey recovered ~350 bone specimens within a 200m x 200m area of open grassland about two kilometers north of Olduvai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). Weathering profiles suggest an exposure,...
