Fusihatchee Faunal Data

Summary

An Access database of zooarchaeology data from the Ancestral Creek Fusihatchee site (1EE191) The data were reported in a 2001 dissertation by Barnet Pavao-Zuckerman entitled "Culture Contact and Subsistence Change at Fusihatchee." The database was created in 2015 by Nicole Mathwich and uploaded to tDAR by Andrew Webster in 2018.

The database was created from handwritten data cards created from 1997-1998 at the University of Georgia. These original cards have been scanned and are included in this tDAR project as "Fusihatchee Faunal Data Paper Copy Scans"

The database is compatible with Microsoft Access 2007 and 2013, however it is best not to switch between versions to avoid file corruption. The entire database can be exported to an Excel and a variety of other formats.

Known issues:

The majority of the database has not been checked against the original cards.

“Str” could refer to structure or stratum. The abbreviation was used inconsistently by the three people who originally created the cards.

About 4/5th of the data were entered by trained zooarchaeologist, the other 1/5th were entered by volunteers who were unfamiliar with the coding system.

Table Information: Card_info

This table includes taxon identification and provenience information, including site, unit, structure/feature, level/stratum, FS number, and screen size. It also includes the taxon identification, count, and total weight of the specimen(s). It links with the Specimen_info table (more detailed faunal data) through the PK_ID field.

Level/Stratum The level or stratum in which the specimen(s) were recovered.
TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Level none none true
FS Number The field specimen number
TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Identifier none none true
Screen size The screen size used, when recorded.
TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Screening none none true
Taxon code Unique number assigned to taxa (see lkp_taxon)

Project The archaeological project. For this dataset, all specimens are part of the Fusihatchee project.
TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Project none none true
Structure/Feature The structure or feature in which the specimen(s) were recovered.
TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number none none true

TEXT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Unit none none true
Taxon Uncoded taxa name, with common name in parentheses.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Fauna : Taxon none none true
PK_ID The Primary key from Card_info table. The PK_ID links this Card_Info table (which has provenience information and the taxon identification) to the Specimen_info table data (which has specific faunal information). Each PK_ID is a unique, automatically generated, sequential integer that groups together all specimens of one taxon that were found in a distinct context. In other words, for every Level/Stratum within a Structure/Feature within a Unit, one PK_ID will be assigned to all specimens of one taxa found in that specific context. Different taxa within the same context receive different PK_IDs. Specimens of the same taxa from different contexts likewise receive different PK_IDs.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Lookup : ID none none true
UGA # Unique number assigned to individual index card onto which the data was originally recorded. UGA refers to the University of Georgia, where the analysis took place.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
Weight (g) The weight in grams of the specimen(s)
DOUBLE  Measurement (gram) Fauna : Weight none none true
Count Count of specimens
BIGINT  Count Fauna : Count none none true

Table Information: Specimen_info

This is the primary data table for faunal data. It includes all recorded information about the faunal data from the site, including NISP, element, side, portion, fusion, burning, marks, and gnawing. It does not display the taxon identification. It links with the Card_info table through the PK_ID field. This Specimen_info table records the faunal information about each specimen, while the Card_info table has the provenience information for each specimen, as as the taxon identification.

Column Name Data Type Type Category Coding Sheet Ontology Search
ID Automatic sequential number assigned to each specimen entry. Multiple specimens may be represented by a single ID number, all the same taxon from the same context. See NISP for the number of identified specimens recovered.
