Summary
The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is a federal project being implemented to transport Colorado River water to large segments of central and southern Arizona. The project requires an extensive amount of construction of aqueducts, pumping stations, and canals. This report is the result of archaeological investigations along one portion of the aqueducts, the Tucson Aqueduct. This aqueduct alignment will bring water to the Picacho Reservoir region of central Arizona.
Archaeological survey along Reach 1 of the Tucson Aqueduct segment of the Central Arizona Project by the Arizona State Museum (ASM) identified a number of archaeological sites that would be adversely impacted by construction. A substantial proportion of these sites skirted modern Picacho Reservoir. In response to these discoveries, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation initiated a multi-faceted plan to intensively study these sites and thereby comply with federal legislation to manage cultural resources. On September 22, 1983, Reclamation contracted with the Office of Cultural Resource Management, Department of Anthropology, Arizona State University (ASU) to recover relevant data from, and address archaeologically significant issues at twenty-one sites located between the Picacho Mountains and Picacho Reservoir. These sites were generally classified as Archaic period by ASM.
