Hecla II and III, An Interpretive Study of Archeological Remains from the Lakeshore Project, Papago Reservation, South Central Arizona
Author(s): Albert C. Goodyear, III
Year: 1975
Summary
This report summarizes archaeological investigations undertaken on the Hecla Mine situated on the south facing slopes of the Slate Mountains, Papago Indian Reservation, north-central Arizona. Three seasons of fieldwork were performed based upon separate contract agreements designed to give mitigation phase clearance to impacted archaeological resources. A variety of methods are developed treating sampling of cultural and floral data, and resource-specific subsistence models are formulated and tested. The subsistence models focus on plant exploitation of species native to the paloverde-saguaro community. A diachronic analysis of the exploitation patterns is provided. The Sells Phase emerges as the apparent dominant time of usage of the Slate Mountains paloverde-saguaro community. Basic differences between riverine-type Hohokam and desert Sells Phase subsistence practices are explicated. An attempt is made to develop cultural formation processes of mountain lithic remains. The position and function of the paloverde-saguaro community as a dependable source of biotic and abiotic resources is discussed in terms of its internal ecological dynamics, as well as relationships to different plant communities in the Lower Sonoran Desert.
