Orme Alternatives: the Archaeological Resources of Roosevelt Lake and Horseshoe Reservoir, Volumes I & II

Summary

The Orme Alternatives Project, which is part of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Central Arizona Project, was implemented in order to examine possible alternatives to the proposed Orme Dam and Reservoir. As reported by Canouts (1975), the proposed Orme Reservoir Project would have an extremely adverse impact upon the cultural resources of central Arizona. Therefore, the Bureau of Reclamation contracted the Arizona State Museum to evaluate the impact of two partial alternatives. One alternative would consist of raising Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River, 30 feet and thereby increasing the size of Roosevelt Lake by approximately 12.7 square miles. Combined with the first alternative would be a second alternative which would consist of raising Horseshoe Dam, on the Verde River, some 140 feet and enlarging Horseshoe Reservoir approximately 7.8 square miles. It was felt by the participants in the project that the kind of data required to evaluate the relative impacts upon cultural resources of these various projects could be obtained through a 20 percent probabilistic sample. The goals of the Orme Alternatives Project were, then, to conduct sample surveys of the Orme Alternatives project areas and to make statistical predictions on the quantity, extent, and nature of the archaeological resources affected by proposed reservoir enlargement. These predictions can then be compared to the Orme Reservoir 100 percent site data.

Volume I includes an overview of the project, historical background of the Tonto Basin and Verde Valley, survey description and results, along with artifact analysis and peer reviews. Peer reviews by Robert C. Euler, Stephen Plog, and Dwight W. Read.

Volume II is a continuation of the appendices and include Site and Sample unit descriptions for both Roosevelt Lake and Horseshoe Reservoir.
