Author(s): Michael Freisinger

Year: 1995

Summary

On September 11, 1995, construction of the parking lot at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park began west of the schoolhouse. The project area is located in the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 7, Township 21 South, Range 13 East. The Presido has been assigned site # AZ DD:8:33 ASM and the schoolhouse AZ DD:8:10 ASM. On September 11, 12, 13 and 18 archaeological monitoring was carried out during 1) grading, cutting and filling of the parking lot area, 2) excavation and capping of two wells, 3) excavation of the parking lot drainage channel and 4) surface preparation of service road/sidewalk near Otero Hall. The intention of the monitoring is to ensure that potentially significant archaeological features associated with the Tubac Presidio (or other historic periods in the development of the town of Tubac) that are on the National and Arizona Registers of Historic Places are not adversely effected by the construction of the parking lot. Monitoring of construction activities was done for all blading and excavation in the proposed parking lot, well capping, drainage trenching and side walk.
