A Cultural Overview and Sample Survey of 21,440 Acres for the Salt River Project

Summary
In September of 1980, the Office of Contract Archeology conducted a Phase I archeological overview and 10% sample survey of the 21,440 acre Salt River Project located in two parcels some 10 miles (6.2 kms.) north of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The purpose of the study was to obtain information which would help the Salt River Project to formulate long-range plans concerning the development of a subsurface coal mine in that region. Part of this investigation was an archival search which uncovered records of 131 previously recorded sites. A 10% systematic random sample survey was also completed so that new information on the nature of the cultural resources could be used to make predictions concerning the distribution of such resources in unsurveyed areas. Thirty-two sites, 28 localities, 64 isolated finds and 39 current cultural manifestations were recorded at that time. In addition, interviews were held with local residents in order to provide data on current land use activities. The above material was compiled and an evaluation made of the potential impact which development would have on the local residents as well as upon the cultural resources. The significance of these cultural resources was clearly demonstrated, in part, by the existence of the Pierre's Archaeological National Register District and by the apparent continuity of Navajo occupation in the project area. A recommendation was then made for a complete survey as modified by information obtained during the 10% sample survey.
