Archaeological Investigations at AZ U:9:8 (ARS), A Santa Cruz Phase Hohokam Site in Mesa, Arizona
Author(s): Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1985
Summary
This report presents the results of an archaeological testing program conducted for Salt River Project (SRP) at the location of a construction site in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. The SRP project involved the excavation of a footing trench for a masonry wall to surround an existing water well. In the process of excavating the trench on the south bank of the Tempe Canal, SRP personnel encountered prehistoric material in the project area. Construction work was discontinued and SRP requested Archaeological Research Services, Inc. (ARS) to evaluate the nature, extent, and significance of the cultural material found. Lyle M. Stone visited the project area on April 26, 1985, finding prehistoric ceramics and lithics on the ground surface and within the SRP construction trench and post hole sidewalls. Based on these observations, Stone (1985a)recommended that archaeological test excavations be conducted in the SRP project area in order to further evaluate the archaeological content and significance of this site. On April 30 and May 1, 1985, Lyle M. Stone and Douglas R. Mitchell performed test excavations at this area, designated as site AZ U:9:8(ARS). Testing included the excavation of two test units by hand and three back-hoe trenches. The remains of a Hohokam pit house and a trash midden were found and partially excavated within the SRP footing trench.
