Cultural Resources Survey of Supplementary Parcels Totaling Approximately 140 Acres Between Gilbert and Higley Roads for the Red Mountain Freeway, Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Walter R. Punzmann; Holly S. DeMaagd
Year: 2001
Summary
As part of the Red Mountain Freeway project, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is adding supplementary right-of-way and temporary construction easements between Gilbert and Higley Roads in Mesa. Much of the new land was previously surveyed during examination of various proposed alignments for the road (Macnider et al. 1999). However, nine new parcels located on private land and Arizona state trust land administered by the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) required survey (Table 1).Under an on-call environmental contract with ADOT, Entranco Engineers, Inc. (Entranco) requested Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) to conduct an intensive cultural resources survey to inventory and assess any cultural resources that might be impacted by the road construction. The survey was performed between July 26-28 and July 3 1-August 1, 2000 by Walter Punzmann, David Barr, and Suzanne DeRosa, and on February 20-23, 2001 by Holly DeMaagd and Alissa Bentz, working under non-collection permit 2000- 21BL-1A and 2001-13BL issued by the Arizona State Museum (ASM). Nine archaeological sites and 39 isolated occurrences were identified.
