Archaeological Data Recovery at Locus S of AZ U:15:46(ASM) Florence, Pinal County, Arizona
Author(s): Scott Crownover; John Rapp
Year: 1994
Summary
Pursuant to a request from Mr. Robert Ewald of Arizona Public Service Company (APS), Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) undertook archaeological testing and subsequent data recovery investigations of a 1.4-acre parcel of state land near Florence, Pinal County, Arizona. The project is located within the confines of Locus S of AZ U:15:46(ASM), a prehistoric agricultural area and lithic scatter. The site had been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places during the Salt-Gila Aqueduct, Central Arizona Project (Teague and Crown 1983). A new study was undertaken to mitigate the effects to the site posed by construction of an APS substation for the nearby Arizona State Prison. This report presents information gathered during testing of 16 of 26 surface agricultural features identified within the proposed Bonney Brook Substation. Additionally, a rock-lined roasting pit (Feature 26) was discovered at the western edge of the substation parcel, and rock alignments indicating the presence of small structures were identified south and west of the substation. The excavation was completed under Arizona State Museum (ASM) permit #93-96.
