Summary
The U.S. Air Force contracted the US Forest Service (USFS) TEAMS Enterprise Unit to complete Phase II evaluations of 15 archaeological sites in the Dix area of JB MDL, New Hanover and Pemberton Townships and Wrightstown Borough, Burlington County and Plumsted and Manchester Townships, Ocean County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey.
Completed between July 16, 2015, and February 5, 2016, field investigations included pedestrian survey and excavation of 12-inch diameter shovel tests at 25-foot, 35-foot and 50-foot intervals, various sized trenches, and 3-foot by 3-foot and 5-foot by 5-foot test units.
The study recommended the following sites NRHP eligible: two sets of overlapping sites that represent nineteenth century farmsteads, 28BU133 and 28BU549 and 28BU134, 28BU547 and 28BU548; 28BU551, a mid-late 19th century farmstead; 28BU526, 28BU689 and 28OC67, Late Archaic through Early Woodland habitations; 28BU913, a mid-late 19th century domestic residence and farmstead. The study also proposed creation of the Pointville Archaeological Historic District composed of 28BU913, 28BU413, 28BU542, 28BU473, and the Pointville Cemetery as an NRHP eligible historic district. The study recommended avoidance of these sites.
The study recommended 28BU685, 28BU698, 28OC149, and 28BU151 not eligible for the NRHP. The study recommended additional Phase II investigation for 28OC152 to assess whether site integrity was compromised by recent construction and development.
