Summary

Mariah Associates Inc. (Mariah) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, performed limited Phase II site testing at four historic sites at McGuire Air Force Base (AFB) in Burlington County, New Jersey. The sites are depicted on the New Egypt, New Jersey. The sites are 28-Bu-458 (HS-29), 28-Bu-459 (HS-31), North Run Refuse Midden, 28-Bu-460 (HS-46).

The context for archaeological research at these sites was provided by the Pinelands Cultural Resource Management Plan for Historic Period Sites (New Jersey Pinelands Commission 1991). Other relevant documents include Hunter Research, Inc. (1992, 1993). No prehistoric sites have been identified in the immediate vicinity, and none were encountered during site testing. The location of a gristmill, not previously recorded but associated with a mill indicated on historic maps, was identified.

The purpose of site testing was to acquire data to evaluate each property for National Register of Historic Places (National Register) eligibility. This project has been called limited because of the short time allotted to completion of the field research. No steps essential to making an evaluation for National Register purposes have been left out, but further testing could provide a clearer picture of the sites and retrieve more data. A final report is in progress, and it will include an artifact catalog, detailed stratigraphic information, and the cultural contexts of the sites.
