Archaeological Monitoring and Discovery plan for a City of Phoenix Waterline Improvement Project Within a Portion of Downtown Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): A. René Muñoz

Year: 2006

Summary

The Street Transportation Department of the City of Phoenix (COP) plans to improve waterlines and water service within a portion of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Previous archaeological investigations have documented the rich archaeological resources preserved beneath the modern development of Phoenix. These archaeological resources include, but are not limited to, remnants of prehistoric Hohokam irrigation canals, habitations, burials, as well as historic deposits related to the early American settlement of Phoenix in the 19th and early 20th centuries (Bostwick 2004; Turney 1929; Howard and Huckleberry 1991a, 1991b). For this reason, City of Phoenix Archaeology Section at the Pueblo Grande Museum (PGM), acting in its capacity as a Certified Local Government recognized by the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, assesses all COP-sponsored projects (or projects located on COP land) for potential impacts to these archaeological resources. PGM also coordinates the development and implementation of any treatment plans if confirmed or potential impacts to Phoenix archaeological resources are identified in association with a particular project (Bostwick 2004).

Because the current project will be limited to excavations within and adjacent to existing paved streets, the COP Historic Preservation Office recognizes that the proposed waterline improvements will have little or no effects on standing historic architecture. Accordingly, this plan is concerned only with the monitoring and documentation of subsurface cultural resources.
