Archaeological Monitoring within the Fowler Ruin, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Pamela J. Cox; Cassandra J. Albush; A.E. (Gene) Rogge
Year: 2010
Summary
The City of Phoenix (City) Street Transportation Department made improvements, including new storm drains [up to 1.5 meters (m) (5 feet) in diameter], catch basins, paving, and landscaping. In October 2007, the City Archaeology Section assessed the proposed project and documented that the eastern part of the project area overlapped the mapped location of the archaeological site known as the Fowler Ruin. That site was recorded more than a century ago and has been described as a Hohokam village site along a major irrigation canal. The Archaeology Section recommended that construction of the part of the project within and near the mapped location of the Fowler Ruin be archaeologically monitored to determine if buried remnants of the archaeological site remain intact. The City Street Transportation Department retained URS Corporation to conduct that monitoring under Contract 124953 for environmental and safety regulatory on-call consulting services. This report documents the goals, methods, and results of that monitoring, which did not identify any remnants of the Fowler Ruin.
