Summary
Between November 7 and 9, 2001, archaeologists from SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted archaeological testing at Site AZ AA:12:351 (ASM), a prehistoric artifact scatter located in the town of Marana, Pima County, Arizona. Archaeological testing was related to the construction of a retail business, and was conducted at the request of the Powell Development Services, LLC and Snell and Wilmer, LLP, in order to comply with the Town of Marana Grading Ordinance. Testing was designed to identify cultural resources that may be affected by the construction, and to evaluate any such cultural resources for significance as determined by their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
The purpose of archaeological testing was to determine if significant subsurface archaeological resources would be adversely affected by the construction of the retail business. The maximum proposed vertical impact of the hobby shop construction is approximately four feet.
Site AZ AA:12:351 (ASM), which was originally recorded as a 20 x 20 m artifact scatter (Fish, Fish, and Madsen 1985) and later enlarged to approximately 40 x 40 m (Stephen 2001), was found to be an artifact scatter that measured at least 75 (east-west) x 200 (north-south) m. Only the portion of the site that occurred within the project area was tested during the course of the current project. A low to low-moderate abundance of artifacts were collected from the surface and no cultural features or subsurface artifacts were identified within the parcel during the test excavations.
