Year: 2018
Summary
The Alabama Army National Guard (ALARNG) operates the Fort McClellan Army National Guard Training Center (FM-ARNGTC) in Calhoun County, Alabama, on the northeast side of Anniston. The area has a rich military history, being established as early as 1898 as a training camp for the Spanish American War. In 1941, a parcel of 22,000 acres to the west was acquired, operating now as Pelham Range. Pelham Range has been the subject of cultural resources investigations for more than 40 years, with most recent studies combining archaeology, geophysical and archival research, and public outreach to learn more about the diversity of the past land use. For the last four years, there has been an increased effort to examine the African American history of Pelham Range, focusing primarily on former cemeteries, schools, churches, and land use, to help enhance the ALARNG's military misison and preservation goals.
