The Gladden Farms Project: Results of Archaeological Testing at AZ AA:12:679 (ASM) Marana, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): Annick Lascaux
Year: 2002
Summary
On August 5 and August 6, 2002, two archaeologists from SWCA Inc., Environmental Consultants, conducted archaeological testing at AZ AA:12:679 (ASM) which was located on privately owned land in Marana, Arizona. The land will be part of a housing development by Gladden Farms L.L.C. and all work was conducted under contract with Hallcraft Homes. Under Town of Marana regulations concerning the treatment of cultural resources, archaeological investigations were required to determine the nature of this site.
AZ AA:12:679 (ASM) had been initially recorded in 1986 as a low density artifact scatter that measured approximately 100 by 100 m. The site consisted of plainware ceramic sherds, flaked stones, one groundstone fragment, and possible fire-cracked rock. The site was interpreted as a possible habitation site of Hohokam affiliation and of indeterminate period of occupation. According to records at the Arizona State Museum, 18 plainware ceramic sherds were collected during the original survey. During the recent SWCA survey (Sayre 2001), approximately 40 plainware sherds were observed at this site. These artifacts were all observed within the berms associated with two east-west canals that bisect the site, and the dirt road that runs parallel to these canals. No cultural remains were observed in the recently tilled fields to the north and south of these canals and dirt road. The artifacts extended over a 150-m length of the road and canals.
It was anticipated that several types of features might be buried, despite disturbance from modern farming practices. A testing program was developed to determine if subsurface cultural resources exist. One sherd and one fire-cracked rock were the only artifacts observed on the site surface. No subsurface cultural materials were encountered in any of the trenches. These archaeological investigations have adequately explored the area for potentially buried archaeological remains, and no further work is recommended at AZ AA:12:679 (ASM).
