Archaeological Testing and Data Recovery of Burials at Lombeye Ruin, AZ T:12:109 (ASM) in South Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): John M. Lindly
Year: 2003
Summary
This report presents the results of an archaeological testing and burial recovery program for four features located in approximately 142 acres of land in south Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The research was conducted at the request of John S. Poulsen of Providence Development, Inc., Arizona, prior to the development or the land for proposed residential use.
Four features designated human burials were recorded during testing of this parcel by Northland Research, Inc in December 2002 and January 2003. The burials were located within the boundaries of the Lombeye Ruin (AZ T:12:109 [ASM]), a previously recorded Hohokam village, dating from the Preclassic to Classic periods. SWCA implemented a program of data recovery and stripping around each burial to determine the extent of all human burials in the area. In addition, two human femora were recovered from Feature 40, a historic trash dump found during stripping around Feature 10. Of the four features documented by Northland, only one (Feature 14) was determined to be a human burial and this was excavated under a burial agreement with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Pueblo Grande Museum. The remaining three features were found to be a thermal feature (Feature 37), a goat skeleton (Feature I 0) and a rodent burrow (Feature 4). The Hohokam pottery recovered from the single burial feature included Gila Plain, Salt variety, Salt Red bowl and a Casa Grande Red-on-buff "duck pitcher;" these suggest an early Classic period date of A.O. I 150-1300 for the feature. The lack or other burials around Feature 14 can be explained by the intensive agricultural plowing of the area that removed all cultural deposits down to a depth of approximately 40 cm below ground surface.
